Very Short Film for Ayaka Nishi Screening in Japan
The latest collaboration with jewelry designer, Ayaka Nishi, “the Initiate” will be screened as a part of an exhibition at White Gallery in Kagoshima, Japan ( Kyushu Island ) from May 14th to the 25th ( my birthday! ).
Curated by long time family friend of Ayaka’s and gallery director, Motofumi Misaka, the exhibition will feature several pieces of Ayaka’s jewelry, Tal Shpantzer’s photography and our film collaborations. Congratulations Ayaka!
I put together a scenario I could shoot quickly in and around a fashion show Ayaka had arranged at the Chelsea Hotel. Marina Kamen cast, produced, hosted, performed and composed music for the runway show and the hair and make up team and models did double duty that night for the film as well. I shot this as still photos on a Canon 7D with available light and a fast lens ( f1.2 ). I post, I animated them and composed a score with lots of ambient city, factory sounds and heavy breathing near the end.
The scenario follows a young woman who is led by secret signs to become initiated into a surreal and sensual world of beauty and adornment via a private club of jewelry fetishists in New York City’s Chelsea underground.
Ayaka’s “Cell Mask” featured in the short, takes inspiration from human cells and the way the replication of small objects can create larger forms. Enamored by guests creations for a masked ball Ayaka attended in Paris last year, she also wanted to explore the mask form in the context of her jewelry making. The “Cell Mask” is available at Not Just a Label.
