Making Waves with Disney and Hayden Harnett
Just wrapped “Pirates Everywhere!” a fashion video with photographer Tal Shpantzer for Hayden-Harnett’s latest collaboration with Walt Disney for the “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides” Disney Signature collection. Posting about “Psunami” the video effects plug-in I used to create a 3d ocean for the titles because its both Prefab and Pretty Fabulous!
This clip of the intro is a sneak peak of the video that will be released on the internets April 1st, along with the collection and look book Tal also shot. April 1st also happens to be the 6th anniversary of Hayden Harnett! Congrats team HH!
This is an image of the ocean waves I created in Red Giant’s “Psunami” plug in for both After Effects and Final Cut Pro. A super simple 3d animated ocean generator that I found really useful because its both very simple to start something and yet gives you quite a few parameters to work with. Start by creating a solid ( layer or shape, depending on whether you’re working in AE or FCP. In this case I’m was working in AE ) and choose the Psunami plug in.
The easy part is that you can begin by choosing from several presets that get you some basic looks.
The still easy, but more flexible part, is that there are lots of settings to work with to tweak things to get what you need.
To dig just a little deeper… in the sub-settings of the camera control, you can instantly create some super visuals as your virtual camera can dive down under the surface of the water for a very dynamic shot.
When composited together with a border made up of design details from the collection, vignette, color, grade and softened up with Eureka’s “silk stocking” plug in, I didn’t think it looked to bad… Check out the intro for the tv show “Lost” or the feature film, “the Aviator”, where some bona fide bad-asses did a great job with this plug in.
All in all, when you need to get your pirate swagger on and Jerry Bruckheimer ain’t signing your paycheck, “Psunami” is the go to plug in that offers tremendous bang-for-the-buck and goes beyond being just a quick fix.
Now if only Red Giant’s “Toonit” rotoscope/ cartooner plug worked as well…….
